Why Broad Altcoin Seasons Are Probably Over
In this cycle, Bitcoin has dominated almost every narrative. From the approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs to general market attention, Bitcoin is being treated more and more as a store of value. Altcoins, on the other hand, have delivered a mediocre performance. In 2024, among the top 100 altcoins by market cap, only 25 tokens managed to outperform Bitcoin. Yes, a handful of altcoins exploded, but the altcoin season never arrived.
My view is simple: not only did we miss a real altseason in 2024, I do not expect a broad altseason to return in the future. When Bitcoin broke its record in March 2024, the market quickly rotated into a hot meme coin frenzy. That frenzy satisfied a lot of speculative demand and market cap expanded rapidly, but it also exposed a serious weakness. The market looked active on the surface, yet it lacked real breadth. Thousands of low-quality altcoins with little actual value attracted capital, which made it extremely difficult for investors to find genuine projects and left many altcoins facing a severe liquidity problem.
I compare the current altcoin market to China's real estate market a few years ago. First-tier cities like Beijing and Shanghai attracted huge investment, while third- and fourth-tier cities like Guiyang were almost ignored. Altcoins are similar. Most altcoins lack buyer attention and new capital inflows. When some altcoins pump, many investors take profits and rotate back into Bitcoin, which further reduces liquidity across the altcoin space. Under these conditions, isolated pumps will happen, but a sustainable altcoin season is very hard to recreate.
Meme Coins Were the Main Altcoin Story of 2024
Most of the explosive altcoin moves in 2024 were concentrated in meme coins. We cannot ignore what happened with tokens like Trump and Melania recently. They had viral narratives, community attention, liquidity and trading volume in the early days. But just two days later, liquidity became a problem again, many people lost money, and that capital rotated back into Bitcoin. These meme coins were wild, but they did not create lasting altcoin conditions.
Looking at the meme coin market as a whole, the numbers tell the story. In the first quarter of 2024, the total meme coin market cap was around 20 billion dollars. By the fourth quarter, it peaked at 137 billion dollars, a more than sixfold increase. In March, BOME reportedly gained 20x in just three hours and kicked off the first meme wave of the year. Later we saw a wave of animal-themed meme coins, AI-themed meme coins, and countless projects that died the same day they launched. Most of the gains were concentrated in a tiny number of survivors.
The Harsh Math of Meme Coin Investing
Meme coins are not just a game of information asymmetry; they are also a game of extreme randomness. No one can predict them, no one can reliably pick the next winner, and no one can replicate a previous success. If you look at data on meme coin win rates from October, most users had an average win rate below 0.5. It is very hard to find a reliable market pattern that improves your odds. Even so, I know many of you will still want to try, because meme coins can produce fast returns.
If you insist on playing, treat the money like a lottery ticket that you can afford to lose. Give yourself enough time to build real experience, because no one can hand you that skill. Find your own comfort zone: some people are diamond hands who buy and hold, others prefer to trade actively. Both can work, but only if you understand your own style. Also, meme coin narratives change extremely fast. A sector that was hot in August may be completely dead by September. You need to follow social hotspots and learn to distinguish short-term hype from long-term trends. AI-related meme concepts, for example, are part of a broader technology trend and may see repeated bursts, while many event-driven coins fade within days.
Beyond Meme Coins: Other Altcoins Still Carry Risk
Outside meme coins, there are L2 projects, DeFi protocols, L1 chains, and exchange tokens. They are a bit more rational than meme coins, but only a bit. In my opinion, everything except Bitcoin should be treated as a venture-style, high-risk investment. Some projects are genuinely useful, like Ethereum, Solana and Cardano. I will cover these individually in future videos because they deserve dedicated analysis. But most altcoins remain high risk.
That does not mean you should avoid all altcoins. It means you should size your exposure accordingly and be very selective. Bitcoin remains the best choice for the core of a portfolio, while altcoins should be treated as satellites that can generate extra returns if you do the work.
How I Would Play Altcoins in 2025
Although I do not expect a broad altcoin season, I am still constructive on altcoins under favorable macro conditions. The market may enter a new phase where altcoins perform positively, but not in the crazy way we saw before when almost everything pumped. Instead, gains will be selective, and you need a clear plan to capture your own alpha.
My recommended allocation is simple. Put the majority of your funds into relatively stable mainstream coins. They have high market recognition and liquidity, and they are usually the first to benefit when the overall market moves up. Then use a small portion to invest in promising new projects, new trends and new concepts. New elements represent market vitality and potential, and they tend to attract fresh investor attention. That is where the asymmetric returns can come from.
One important rule is to exit decisively when the market starts to show signs of rotation or when a project underperforms. Do not become emotionally attached. The market never runs out of new trends and new projects, so there is no reason to marry a losing position. Also, avoid blindly chasing highs. When market sentiment is extremely euphoric, risk is greatest. Learn to use on-chain data and indicators like capital inflows to analyse the situation. That will greatly improve your success rate.
- Keep most capital in liquid, widely recognized coins.
- Allocate a small, separate portion to new narratives and projects.
- Exit decisively when sentiment reverses or a project underperforms.
- Avoid chasing vertical moves; study on-chain data and capital flows first.
Conclusion: Discipline Beats Hope in This Altcoin Cycle
I remain optimistic about altcoin investing over the next year, but only with the right framework. My own approach combines stability and aggression. The stable part comes from allocating to mainstream coins and capturing the overall market growth. The aggressive part comes from deep research and sharp market observation to capture a small number of high-potential altcoin opportunities. That combination is what I believe works best in this environment.
The dream of a broad altseason may be over, but that does not mean altcoins are dead. It just means the game has changed. Those who adapt, stay disciplined, and respect risk will still find opportunities. Those who wait for everything to pump together will probably keep waiting.
