The Layoff That Made Me Rethink Execution
Imagine your boss walks in and says you are not on the layoff list this time, but your salary is being cut by 50 percent. That scenario sounds harsh, but it mirrors what AI is doing to every single working person right now. AI is repricing you more than it is replacing you.
I saw this play out with a friend last year. He worked in research for a crypto team, and he used AI to churn out onchain data reports faster than anyone else. He had the highest output on the entire team, but he was still fired in the latest round of layoffs. The people who kept their jobs were not the most efficient or the most productive. They had something else, something that AI could not replicate.
Execution Used to Be the Product
Ten years ago, companies hiring programmers, designers, and translators were really buying one thing: execution power. Tasks that only humans could do were expensive. Employers had to accept vacation time, job expectations, and all the friction of human employment. They could not cancel your contract easily, and that gave you a safety net. Nobody questioned it.
Now those old rules are loosening. Execution labor is becoming the cheapest commodity in the market. What used to be valuable simply because a human did it now has almost no value when AI can do the same task faster and for less.
Three Signals from Big Tech in 2026
This year alone, several major companies made decisions that show exactly where the market is heading.
- Shopify's CEO sent an internal memo saying that before any team can request a hire, they must first prove that AI cannot do the job. The bar for hiring is actually getting higher. Companies used to hire people who could get the work done. Now they only hire people who can do what AI cannot.
- Microsoft laid off around 4,800 positions this year, hitting Xbox sales and consulting hardest. At the same time, they raised their AI investment budget for fiscal year 2026 to nearly $190 billion. The company is moving money from execution to choice makers and infrastructure, rather than pulling it out entirely.
- At Davos this year, Nvidia's Jensen Huang mentioned something counterintuitive. AI can already read X-rays, but the number of radiologists is actually going up. Reading the scan was only a small part of a doctor's value. The real value lies in deciding what to do after seeing the results. AI gives doctors more time to make the right call.
The Architect and the Construction Crew
To understand this shift, think of AI as a construction crew. It moves bricks fast, builds walls accurately, works 24 hours without sleeping, never asks for a raise, and never throws a tantrum. But a construction crew never decides where the building should be built, what it should look like, who it is for, when to start, or which wall to tear down if a crack appears.
The boss does not ask the construction crew those questions. The boss asks the architect. When construction becomes cheap, the architect becomes more expensive. The same is true in the AI era. You need to become the architect, the one who knows what should be built, what should be done, and how and when.
What Actually Makes You Valuable Now
If everyone has access to the same AI tools, a $20 per month subscription to ChatGPT or Claude AI will not make you stand out. The tools are shared and the solutions are cheap. The real dividing line between people is the oldest thing in the world: your judgment, your creativity, and your ability to bear risk. Technology is not the real barrier anymore.
A person with high-dimensional abilities who is willing to stand behind their decisions becomes the scarcest, most valuable currency in this uncertain market. There is an irony here. The crypto world spent over a decade talking about trustless systems, trying to use code to replace trust between people. But in the AI era, after coming full circle, trust between people has become the one thing algorithms cannot steal. Who would have thought that after 15 years of code is law, we are back to humans mattering? I guess I was wrong in a way, and that does not happen often.
Stop Asking If AI Will Replace You
Stop asking whether ChatGPT will replace you. Ask instead what you will do with the time AI gives back to you. Open your AI tool of choice and type this prompt: 'Right now, I want to become the architect in my field. From today on, you are my construction crew. Help me handle all the repetitive execution work and help me become a better CEO of my life, a better CEO of my job.'
AI did not steal your job. It just gave you back all the time that trivial tasks used to consume. The barriers have been flattened. The only limit left is your ambition.
The Real Survival Skill
Execution is no longer a competitive advantage. It has become a commodity, and the market is repricing everyone accordingly. The people who thrive in the 2026 tech and crypto job market will be the ones with strong judgment, creativity, and the willingness to take responsibility for their decisions.
You can keep trying to outwork an AI, or you can learn to direct it. The choice is yours, and it is the kind of choice that determines whether you get fired, repriced, or promoted.
