Why I started paying attention to the Stanford data

I was at a private meeting in Paris recently. Many friends there were not repositioning because of short-term market action. They were adjusting their core logic because they saw the speed at which AI and crypto are being bound together. That speed is much faster than most of us expected.

One number made the point clearly. In the latest Stanford AI Index Report, global businesses poured close to 600 billion dollars into AI in a single year. That figure is startling. The capital is chasing something much larger than a smarter assistant robot. It is a competition for the final settlement layer of global wealth over the next few decades.

The legacy financial system has become AI's bottleneck

Look at what AI can already do. It can execute tens of thousands of transactions and verifications every second. Then look at the human banking layer it still has to touch. A transfer waits for manual review. A cross-border settlement can take days through Swift. A regulator can freeze an account on a phone call.

AI has three basic requirements for money. First, the system must run 24 hours a day. Second, no human needs to approve every step. Third, no single party can stop it on a whim. Any place controlled by people brings corruption risk, delay, and red lines that can be drawn overnight.

Smart contracts on a blockchain settle in code. Once deployed, nobody changes the rules. Nobody freezes a wallet because of mood. Nobody cuts the funding line. That is why AI ultimately selects crypto. The old system simply cannot meet the minimum requirements.

Bitcoin is the settlement and treasury layer

When machines need to settle with each other, they need a global reference asset that no central party prints or freezes. Bitcoin naturally fits that role. It is the strongest decentralized digital asset, with a fixed supply of 21 million coins. Code is the rule, and there is nothing to negotiate.

The market is already moving. On April 14, US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded about 410 million dollars in net inflows. BlackRock's IBIT alone took in roughly 214 million dollars that day. IBIT's cumulative net inflows have crossed 64 billion dollars. Institutions are buying. The real positioning may not even be fully visible yet.

If you were an AGI, where would you hold value? In an account that can be sanctioned? In a system where a central bank can print at will? Or in a network where no single force can turn it off? The answer is becoming obvious.

Stablecoins are the execution and payroll layer

A treasury alone is not enough. AI also needs a tool for daily execution, something stable enough to price work and pay for services. That is where stablecoins enter. The total stablecoin market cap has now passed 320 billion dollars and is still climbing.

Stablecoins allow businesses to move value on-chain faster and cheaper than banks. A smart contract can settle payroll automatically. One line of code triggers payment when conditions are met. No need to run to a bank, no three-day waiting period for employees. AI can pay you the moment the work is done.

Hong Kong makes stablecoin payroll official

On April 10, Hong Kong issued its first batch of stablecoin licenses. This is a major regulatory signal. Until now, companies using stablecoins for payroll worried about compliance. Will the bank recognize it? Will the regulator approve it? The Hong Kong licenses remove a large part of that uncertainty.

In practice this means a company can use stablecoins on a public blockchain, settle instantly, reduce bank costs, and automate with code. The boss does not visit a branch. The employee does not wait days. AI can send payment the same way a line of code executes. The pipeline from work to payment is being built quickly.

What you should do now

  • Stop treating crypto as speculation. Treat it as infrastructure for the AI age, like water and electricity. You do not need to gamble on water; you need to know where it flows and how to use it.
  • Learn stablecoins properly. This does not mean blindly buying USDC. Understand what stablecoins can do: instant settlement, cross-border payments, programmatic payroll. Stablecoins are the tool AI will use to pay salaries. If you learn to use them now, you will not be left behind.
  • Move your skills toward areas AI cannot replace. Ask yourself which parts of your job involve assuming responsibility or handling complex human situations. AI can generate contracts, but it cannot sign and take legal responsibility for you. AI can send wages, but it cannot calm an anxious employee. Anchor your value in decision-making responsibility and deep human connection.

The question is not whether you believe it

The structure is now clear. Scarce digital assets like Bitcoin form AI's treasury. Stablecoins are the payroll and execution tools. The Bitcoin network is the settlement environment for AI's financial system. The data is already telling this story.

But my real question for you is simpler. When AI starts paying your salary, will you be someone AI needs, or someone AI replaces? How far away is that day? I would rather be early.
