Why I Started Using OpenClaw

I have been in crypto for eight years and retired early to a farm in New Zealand. I don't believe in get rich quick schemes that promise you can press a button and print money. But I do believe in efficiency, less friction, less stress, and less screen time.

OpenClaw has been hyped everywhere, and after watching many YouTubers and X posts, I decided to test it myself. I wanted to see if it could actually make trading easier without selling fairy tales. This guide is the result of that real world testing.

Hosting Options: Why a VPS Wins

Your agent needs a place to live. You could use an old computer at home, but I prefer a VPS, a virtual private server. Using a dedicated machine at home is possible, but you should give the agent its own device so it doesn't accidentally delete your files or leak personal info.

A VPS has major advantages: it stays online 24/7, you can choose the server country, internet speeds are usually faster than home connections, and hardware failures are handled by the provider. It is also much cheaper than buying a dedicated Mac Mini. Today I use Hostinger, but any provider with one-click OpenClaw installs works.

  • Online 24/7 with no downtime from your local internet.
  • Choice of server country and faster internet than most home connections.
  • Hardware failures are handled by the provider.
  • Much cheaper than buying a dedicated Mac Mini.
  • One-click OpenClaw installs save time and money.

Step 1: Deploy OpenClaw with One Click

On Hostinger, I installed Ubuntu with Docker. The Docker template is free and supports one-click installs. In the control panel, click Compose, then Deploy, and search for OpenClaw.

You will need three API keys: an Anthropic key, an X API key, and a Telegram bot token. For Anthropic, create a key in your account and paste it. For X, create an API key so the agent can use X search tools. For Telegram, go to BotFather in the Telegram app, create a new bot with the /newbot command, and copy the token.

Paste all three keys into the deployment form, click Deploy, and the server installs OpenClaw automatically. That is the entire installation process.

Step 2: Connect Telegram and Define Your Agent

After deployment, you get a gateway token. Click to copy it and paste it to log in to the OpenClaw dashboard. Then give your agent a quick identity. I used a prompt like: You are Little C, a crypto expert. You monitor trends and accounts on X. My name is Cédric.

The agent updates its own configuration files. Next, open the connectivity option in the dashboard. You will see a pairing code. Copy it and paste it into your Telegram chat with the bot. Once pairing is approved, you can close the dashboard and talk to your agent directly in Telegram, send voice messages, and manage files.

Step 3: Configure the Twitter Monitoring Job

Now for the real work. I gave my agent a custom command to monitor specific X accounts and react to new posts. The logic is simple: when certain conditions happen, it should perform an action and send me a message. You can copy and paste a working template or write your own.

I tested it with crypto and Bitcoin keywords. The agent processed the setup and started working in the background within about 30 seconds. A useful tip: if you want to verify everything is running, test with an account that posts frequently and use the most common letter in the English language, E, as a keyword.

Managing Costs and Model Choices

Running this whole setup costs less than $10 per month for the VPS. Token usage is also low if you choose models wisely. I started with a powerful model for setup, but once the logic is dialed in, switch to cheaper models like Claude Haiku. For everyday monitoring, you don't need top-tier models.

My point is the logic always stays the same: test with small amounts first, then optimize. Don't go all in from the beginning. Once everything works smoothly, you can switch to cheaper models to keep costs serious low while still getting the job done.

What's Next: Advanced Trading Strategies

In the next video, I plan to take this further. I will show you how to analyze raw on-chain data using APIs and how to do real news arbitrage. For now, focus on getting your own OpenClaw agent running and monitoring the accounts that matter to you.

Final Thoughts

OpenClaw is not a money printer, but it is a serious efficiency tool. With a VPS, three API keys, and a simple configuration, you can have your own digital employee monitoring X and executing your logic around the clock.

Start small, test your logic, and switch to cheaper models once everything works smoothly. That approach will save you both money and stress.
